I’ve been following Lightship from the start (since 6D ) and love the SDK. However, I can’t use it for my use case because VPS’ useage is limited to public spots etc.
Why is this limitation in place, while other similar services allow for VPS anywhere. Is it a legal thing (since I assume you own the data)? Cost (the whole world is too much to host)? Quality (can’t guarantee enough scans)?
I would like the limitation to be re-considered so I can just create a persitent AR experience whereever I like…
Hi Jelmer,
VPS is specifically used with publically accessible landmarks to ensure accessibility to all and to ensure people are not wandering into private property and potentially getting into trouble.
Additionally, when scanning a landmark to turn into a VPS Wayspot, it does need to meet certain criteria so even if everything were to be publically accessible, not everything would meet the criteria to be a VPS Wayspot: https://lightship.dev/docs/ardk/how-to/vps/tooling/create_vps_activated_location/
I would recommend checking out WPS which lets you place virtual content without the need for a landmark: https://lightship.dev/docs/ardk/how-to/ar/world_pose/
